The Four Color Media Monitor

Because if we're going to try and stop the misuse of our favorite comics and their protagonists by the companies that write and publish them, we've got to see what both the printed and online comics news is doing wrong. This blog focuses on both the good and the bad, the newspaper media and the online websites. Unabashedly. Unapologetically. Scanning the media for what's being done right and what's being done wrong.

Two bad uses of Wonder Woman

Grant Morrison's put out a sequel to his WW: Earth One graphic novel, and what he has in store with Doctor Psycho sounds like a nod to left-wing feminism in a very revolting way:
...By flipping the script on his original 1940s incarnation, Morrison and Paquette have taken Doctor Psycho from campy vintage hypnotist to modern day "pickup artist."

The "pickup artist" or PUA community in the real world is a group of men who believe they can subliminally suggest ideas to women using scripts and other "mind control" tactics to make them more compliant, usually aiming for some sort of sexual or romantic favor. Dr. Psycho's new angle was inspired by a combination of real-world sources, according to Morrison, who spoke to IGN along with a small group of reporters at a press event. "I was looking towards the modern version of the [creepy 40s hypnotist]," he said. He went on to cite real world, government sponsored mind control experiments such as the infamous MKUltra, a CIA experiment in the Cold War era that used psychotropic drugs and hypnosis to make subjects suggestible. According to Morrison, it's not hard to see the connections between the theories that inspired MKUltra and the PUA playbook.

"You see it in Neil Strauss' book The Game. [...] We really went deep with it in the sequences between Psycho and Diana," Morrison said. "When he sits and talks to her, it's based on the actual script used by pickup artists with the movements he makes, he mirrors all her gestures, he makes this 'casting off' gesture every time he wants her to perceive something as negative. It was really tightly worked out to follow those scripts."

But this Psycho is after more than just a date from Diana. Despite the frequently romantic or sexual goals of his real-life inspiration, Psycho on Earth One is actually backed by the US government with the ultimate goal of completely isolating Diana away from her friends, mission and moral center, all to prove that she is as much a threat as the military believes her to be.

"Our Doctor Psycho is the supervillain version of a pickup artist, so he has these amazing resources at his disposal," Morrison said. "He can organize these massive scenarios which involve hundreds of people in any location. He can twist your idea of what's real and what's not."
Oh, so does this mean it's a metaphorical attack on the Trump administration? The way he makes it sound like pickup artists looking for a fling with a gal are only exploiting and nothing more is also offensive, because if romance and sex are consensual, then what Morrison and IGN are insinuating is ludicrous, and completely ignores that women love romantic flings too. But then, even the first volume of this Elseworlds-like tale was already degrading enough, so much that even some shoddy liberal sites disliked it too.

And those aren't the only bad tidings involving WW. There's even another crossover coming about from DC called "The Witching Hour" where Diana's turned into a menace:
It might be against her will, but Wonder Woman has become the biggest threat currently facing the DC Universe with the latest event of The Witching Hour. The revelation comes on the heels of (and is directly related to) Wonder Woman’s new magic powers seen in Justice League Dark. As it turns out, Wonder Woman’s time as a child on Themyscira wasn’t always a paradise.

DC has rewritten Wonder Woman’s backstory (again) adding even more mysticism to her origins. She is still the biological daughter of Zeus, but another god has a much more personal claim on Princess Diana. When she was just a child, the Greek goddess Hecate "marked" her... turning the Amazon into a magical ticking time bomb.
Needless to say, this is getting very aggravating decades ago, mainly because it's all part of a crossover event, instead of a self-contained story. And it looks like it's all being told in close proximity to DC's other revolting event, Heroes in Crisis. That they're sticking with the less imaginative premise of WW being Zeus' daughter instead of being birthed from magical clay is another detractor.

It's bad enough a propagandist like G. Willow Wilson's been hired to script WW. Now DC's taking audience alienation ever further with these two new degradations. It's clear they're leading Bill Marston's famous creation to a very sad ending, much like Marvel's doing with Capt. America.

Pick up artists doesn't just mean guys trying to flirt with a girl on the street. These are men who rip off guys by teaching courses on how to pick up girls, basically training them to be obnoxious idiots, and it is a real ugly and exploitative movement. The exploitation is mostly of the poor suckers who take the courses.

OR...... it's the philosophy called "game" and anyone can use it and adapt it's principles to any relationship between a man and a woman. The principles are based on evolutionary psychology and appear to work to make women happier and men more attractive. This is very contra feminism as one of the primary aims of modern feminism is to poison the relationship between men and women while promoting lesbian relationships.

To the extent the approach works, it can be used as easily by women on women as by men on women. To that extent it undermines the patriarchy and upsets the heterosexual cis-gender dynamic, in that it facilitates lesbian women in picking up heterosexual women who otherwise would not be interested and then converting them to the feminist agenda.

WW has been downgraded, from a rather brilliant idea of subverting the myth of Pandora, to a crap, generic female Hercules. Not to mention that effectively gives her what used to be Wonder Girl's origin.
    What a trainwreck!

What else do you expect from Grant "I've been drinking since I was a fetus" Morrison?
